Lash Extension Aftercare: What the First 48 Hours Decide

Elisha Kang · August 2, 2026

You just got a fresh set of classic or wispy lashes at our Koreatown studio, and they look absolutely flawless. But the work isn't over. In fact, the most important part starts the moment you walk out our door on 6th Street. The first 48 hours after your lash extension application are non-negotiable for long-term retention. This is when the adhesive fully cures and bonds to your natural lash. How you treat your lashes during this window decides whether you'll be back for a refill in 3-4 weeks or much sooner. As the director and an artist who has seen thousands of sets, I'm going to give you the straight talk we give every client in our chair. This isn't about scare tactics. It's the honest, practical science of adhesive and aftercare that determines your lash success.

1. The 24-Hour Cure: Hands Off, Steam Off

The adhesive we use is medical-grade cyanoacrylate. It sets immediately upon application, but it takes a full 24 hours to reach its maximum bond strength through a process called polymerization. Think of it like super glue on a model airplane. It holds right away, but you wouldn't stress the joint until it's fully set.

Avoid All Moisture and Steam

This means absolutely no water, steam, or sweat on the lashes for 24 hours. The moisture in vapor can create a microscopic barrier between the adhesive and your natural lash, causing a weak bond that leads to premature shedding. Skip the hot yoga, the sauna, the long, steamy shower. When washing your face, use a washcloth carefully around the eye area.

No Touching, Rubbing, or Picking

Your natural oils from your fingers can also break down the adhesive bond before it's fully cured. Resist the urge to touch, rub, or pick at your lashes. They might feel a bit different or look extra shiny at first, but leave them alone.

##> IMPORTANT: If you have an active eye infection, stye, or significant allergies with itchy eyes, lash extensions are NOT right for you until it's fully healed. The procedure can aggravate the condition, and proper aftercare will be impossible.

2. The Oil Question: Your Long-Term Strategy

After the initial 24-hour cure, you can get your lashes wet. But the next frontier is oil. Oil is the number one long-term enemy of lash adhesive. It slowly breaks down the bond over time.

Choose Oil-Free Products

Starting from day two, be vigilant about your eye-area products. Use oil-free makeup removers, cleansers, and moisturizers. Many creams, sunscreens, and even some serums contain oils that will migrate to the lash line. We recommend gentle, lash-extension-safe micellar water.

Cleansing Is Mandatory

Contrary to some myths, you must clean your lash extensions daily after the first 24 hours. Dirt, pollen, and makeup buildup create a breeding ground for bacteria and can also weigh down the lash base. Gently brush them clean with a lash-safe cleanser.

3. Sleep Smart: Your Pillow Matters

How you sleep is a huge factor in lash retention, especially in the first few nights. Friction is the culprit.

Sleep on Your Back

This is the gold standard. Sleeping on your back ensures no pressure or rubbing against the pillow. If you absolutely cannot sleep on your back, try to be a "starfish" on your side, keeping your face off the pillow as much as possible.

Consider Silk or Satin

Switching to a silk or satin pillowcase can drastically reduce friction compared to cotton. It's gentler on your lashes (and your skin and hair, too).

4. What to Do (and Not Do) for Perfect Retention

Let's consolidate this into a simple checklist for your first two days and beyond.

The First 48-Hour Do Not List:

  • Do not get them wet for 24 hours.
  • Do not expose them to steam or sweat.
  • Do not use any oil-based products near your eyes.
  • Do not rub, pick, or pull at your lashes.
  • Do not use a regular mascara (it's unnecessary and hard to remove cleanly).
  • Do not use an eyelash curler (you will break the extensions).

The First 48-Hour Do List:

  • Do keep them dry and avoid steam for 24 hours.
  • Do sleep on your back if possible.
  • Do gently brush them with a clean spoolie if they look misaligned.
  • Do book your refill appointment in 3-4 weeks to maintain fullness. Our classic set refills start at $50, volume at $80.

5. When to Come See Us Again

Perfect aftercare gives you the best chance at great retention, but all extensions follow your natural lash growth cycle. Expect a natural, gradual shed.

Schedule Your Refill

We recommend a refill every 3-4 weeks to replace the lashes that have shed with your natural cycle. Waiting longer than 4 weeks often means you've lost too many extensions and will need a full set again (classic sets start at $90). You can book your refill with your preferred artist directly on our booking site.

Consider a Lash Lift

If you find the aftercare for extensions too high-maintenance, a Korean Lash Lift might be a better fit. It enhances your natural lashes with a perm and tint for 6-8 weeks with zero daily maintenance. It's only $69.99 and a fantastic option for those with already decent natural length.
